Student view

Living

Non-elitist community college, with high proportion of mature and especially local students. Active and campaigning SU; students represented on all college committees with direct and uncompromising stance. Union now located in principal college building, making it easily accessible for students. Book early for accommodation – new block is expensive but very tasty. Exciting, diverse and very affordable social scene. Local community has friendly and easy-going attitude to strangers but like in any big city, be aware of personal safety.

Summary

Housing: Many cheap properties available (but beware of standards). Many students spend 2 years in college accommodation. Eats: Meals good value on campus (including big breakfast). Can get a large meal for £4 locally at eg Walkabout, Revolution, Lunch Box, Love Apple. Drink: Union building has cheap drinks and promos; no question, best in town. Several large student-orientated pubs in easy reach of campus; The Sound Gallery cheap. Tetleys local brew. Nightlife: SU has regular club night and events (eg Comedy Club, DFD at the union); few bands. Bradford Film Theatre and Pictureville for ultimate independent releases, new and old. Queen’s Hall, Chicago’s and The Sound Gallery good student clubs. Sports: Full range of sports facilities, mostly shared with university. Locals: Area is student-friendly (though city centre sometimes not good at weekends). Travel: Cheap buses, trains and taxis. Financial help: Limited funds for the very desperate via college student services. Jobs: Plenty about, if you look, on and off campus. Best features: Union and college student services. And worst: Lack of sports facilities.

Past Students

David Hockney (painter); New Model Army (rock band); Bernard Ingham (journalist); Terry Rooney MP; Michael Jack MP; Terrorvision (rock band); Robbie Paul (rugby player), Bradford Bulls.
