Freshers Survival Guide:

Locals

Jump to:

If there are good relations between students and locals, you will feel welcome in the streets, shops and pubs, and able to travel late at night. If relations are antagonistic, life is much harder.

University towns often have a mix of student-friendly localities and areas where students are not so welcome; the SU will almost certainly give you guidance as part of its induction. Sometimes there is an unwritten rule that students go out on some evenings, locals on others.

Some students can be made to feel so uncomfortable that they stick within their campus, rather than mixing with the locals – particularly where youth unemployment is high. You may feel that you are a cash-starved student; the local unemployed may see you as privileged, state-subsidised, middle class. If you have problems with locals, contact the SU.
