Both Oxford and Cambridge have given the thumbs down to the government's plans to kill off the current structure of AS- and A-levels. Cambridge colleges have told Michael Gove, the education secretary, that his plans to encourage schools to abandon AS-levels will set back a decade's effort to make entry fairer and admit more state school pupils. Oxford University defends A-levels as they are, saying they are helpful in the admissions process.
