Tougher graduate job market

9th Nov 2012

Today's graduates face a much tougher job market than a decade ago. A new in-depth study reveals that nearly half of 2010 graduates have taken work that is not designated as for graduates.

Those who started university in 2006 owe more than £20,000, according to the study by Futuretrack, which was commissioned by the Higher Education Careers Service Unit. The government now accepts that half of all student loans will never by paid off.

But graduates still have more earning power than those without a degree, who face even tougher employment prospects. They were paid less money than graduates (70% earned less than £15,000 in their first jobs), were more likely to feel at a disadvantage in the jobs market and were less optimistic about their long-term prospects, according to the study.
