Oxford cuts fees for poorest students

18th Jul 2012

Oxford University is to abolish tuition fee increases for the poorest students – a move made possible through a major donation with matched funding, totalling £300 million.

This donation (a record amount for a European university) with its matched funding, will enable the university to peg the fees at £3500 a year for the poorest students and also allow funding for their living costs. Students whose family income is below £16k a year will receive a financial package worth about £11k.

Andrew Hamilton, Oxford's Vice-Chancellor, spoke of the importance of ensuring that all real and perceived barriers are removed from students' university choices. The intention is that the scheme will run in perpetuity and that over half of the eligible students will receive this financial package within three years
